When Bobby Braddock wrote:
“Our little boy is four years old
And quite a little man
So we spell out the words
We don’t want him to understand
Like T-O-Y
Or maybe S-U-R-P-R-I-S-E
But the words we’re hiding from
him now
Tears the heart right out of me
Our D-I-V-O-R-C-E becomes final
today
Me and little J-O-E
Will be going away”... .etc.. .etc...
it’s doubtful that he was actually
aware of the musical monster he had
created. Little did he know that he
had written words to a song that
would paddle Miss Tammy Wynette
all the way up-stream to a point
where she would be presented with
the title of “Female Singer of the
Year” for 1968.
To Bobby the tune “D-I-
V-O-R-C-E” was like any other piece
of material a songwriter puts down
on paper... .a hopeful hit. It was not
the first attempt he’d made at writ-
ing songs, nor was it the first chart
climber he’d brought about for the
country music industry. At the initial
time the song was being written,
probably more than anything else,
it was an honest effort of one song-
writer trying to set a trend. As you
know, the end result was a block bus-
ter for the world of music... .and it
seems fitting, at this point, to tell
you a little about the guy who’s had
his name in fine print on this par-
ticular hit, as well as many others.
Bobby Braddock not only has
“D-I-V-O-R-C-E” to his credit, but
“The Ballad of Two Brothers,” cur-
rently enjoying smooth sailing on the
C/W ship; “Ruthless,” made popu-
lar a while back by The Statler
Brothers; “You Pushed Me Too
Far,” recorded by Ferlin Huskey,
complete with a surprise Alfred
Hitchcock-type ending; a tongue-in-
cheek tune titled, “Country Music
Lover,” by Little Jimmy Dickens;
a clever comedy situation called,
“You Can’t Have Your Kate and
Ed-ith, too”; plus, Jack Reno’s last
two hit singles for Dot, “HowSweet...
