When asked why she chose Nashville
to cut an album of country songs, she
replied: “Why not? The question now-
adays is why anyplace else?” Thirteen
three-hour disc making assignments for
the Vanguard label later, Joan Baez had
cut her first country and western album,’’..
...for my husband (David Harris), be-
cause country music’s his favorite, and
because I love country music....”
There were no telltale lines of fatigue
under her dark, dancing eyes as she spoke,
answering simply as though what she had
to say should go without saying. In-
stead, her eyes shone with the glow of a
girl who was throughly immersed in doing
what she enjoyed doing most. And it
was apparent to all beholders that this
radiant young lady had captured theheart
of every musician who had worked him-
self to a pool of sweat in an effort to
help her turn out her first country album.
“What can I say?” Grady Martin re-
lated. “She’s Fantastic! A joy to work
with, really.” Other equally fascinated
music masters on the scene for the thir-
teen sessions (which could be more readily
compared in all innocence to love-ins,
rather than sessions) were Hal Ruggs,
Pete Drake, Pete Wade, Jerry Reed, Kenny
Buttrey, Tommy Jackson, Buddy Spiker,
Harold Bradley, Junior Huskey, Hargis
Robbins, David Briggs and Norman Put-
nam. And of this multi-talented assembly,
Joan said, in turn: “Superlative!”
The term ‘superlative’ is also appro-
priate for the sound we know as Joan
Baez’ voice; the voice which goes on to
be one of the pure, original and most-
listened-to sounds in the history of music.
