Antique Carved Vegetable Ivory Spool HolderEnglish * Circa 1880
This little antique spool holder is carved from vegetable ivory in a very unusual form. The top and bottom are scalloped and pierced. A turned bone* spindle goes through the spool and has a vegetable ivory ring at the top. It holds a wooden spool of silk thread.
The
condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or loss. The ring at the top has a split, but I think that's so it can be removed to change the spool. It measures 2" high and the base is 1 1/4
" in diameter.
*This item is made of bone from a domestic cow (bovine) and not from an endangered species.
Vegetable Ivory comes from the corozo (tagua) nut of a South American palm tree. It has the hardness and texture of ivory and a warm honey color. The little spots and ivory like grain are also natural features of this material.
