    Description

    Antique Sterling Silver & Mother of Pearl Thread Spool
    English * Circa 1850
    The top of this very special antique spool is sterling silver (tested) and hand engraved with ornate scrolls surrounding a shield. The bottom is mother of pearl and it pulls apart so that a ball or spool of thread could be slipped on. It measures 1 3/8" high and the top is almost 1 3/8" in diameter.
    The condition is excellent with no dents, chips or other damage.
    It was once part of a set of spools in an English workbox and I would have loved to see that box. The style of workbox is
    shown on pp. 33-40 of Gay Ann Rogers' book
    An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools.
    The spools in those boxes are the more usually seen mother of pearl topped spools.
