Vintage French
metal embroidery bullion or check purl as it is more commonly called. It is a handsome shade of steel and was made over 75 years ago in France

Check purl has been used for centuries to add rich texture to hand embroidery.  It is a traditional embellishment for ecclesiastical, military, ceremonial, and formal attire.
It is made from metal wire which is coiled into a spring-like spiral.  It is typically cut into short pieces, using a sharp scissors, and stitched into place like beads, with the needle passing through the spiral’s hollow center.
When working with it, remember that bullion is delicate.  It’s easily stretched beyond its elastic limit, and after that, will not return to its original shape.
This item is original antique stock from the archives of Tinsel Trading, in NY, which was founded by my grandfather in 1933. I am constantly adding ribbons, trims, tassels, cords, fringes and more, some dating back as far as 1880's
